WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fourth-ranked Purdue women's golf team fired a 294 in the third round of the Big Ten Championships and trails Michigan State by two strokes with 18-holes to play.
The 2011 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships is being held April 22 to 24 at the Lake Shore Country Club, a 6,303-yard, par-72 venue in Glencoe, Ill. The 72-hole tournament allows for six golfers from each school to compete with the lowest four scores each round counting toward the team total. Purdue has just five golfers participating.
Senior Numa Gulyanamitta is tied for the individual lead with the Spartans' Caroline Powers at even par. The Boilermakers have won the last three individual and team conference titles but will have some work to do on Sunday to bring home a school-record fourth-consecutive championship.
Purdue has recorded a three-round total of 893 (303-296-294) while Michigan State leads with a score of 891 (306-290-295) and Ohio State is in third with a 900 (304-296-300). Host Northwestern (308-293-300=901) is fourth while Wisconsin (303-296-305=904) has dropped to fifth.
For the second-straight round, Gulyanamitta recorded the low number for the Boilermakers with a one-under par 71. She has a three-round total of 216 (74-71-71) to own a share of the lead. The native of Rayong, Thailand, earned five birdies on Saturday while committing four bogeys.
Laura Gonzalez-Escallon is tied for fifth with a 224 (74-75-75, +8). The sophomore from Belgium recorded a 75 in the third round with one birdie and four bogeys. Gonzalez-Escallon has proven she can play this course. She finished in second place at the Lady Northern Invitational, a fall preview of the conference tournament venue that was held Oct. 11 and 12.
Sophomore Paula Reto carded an even-par 72 on Saturday and is tied for seventh with a score of 225 (80-73-72, +9). Senior Thea Hoffmeister has steadily improved each round, firing a 76 in the third. She is tied for 26th with a three-round score of 231 (78-77-76). Classmate Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is tied for 36th after recording a pair of 77s, including one today after carding an 80 in the second round for a total of 234.
