INDIANAPOLIS - It proved true for Purdue on Friday that it is tough to beat a good team three times in a season, as No. 2 seed Penn State defeated the seventh-seeded Boilermakers 73-61 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

Purdue (20-11, 9-7) had knocked off the Lady Lions twice in the regular season, including a two-point victory at Penn State just over a week ago.

Brittany Rayburn had the hot hand early for the Boilermakers, scoring the first five points of the game. Penn State responded by hitting two three-pointers while Purdue got its next four points from Chantel Poston. In a fast paced first half, Purdue earned its biggest lead at 31-24 at 3:04 on a three-pointer by Courtney Moses, but Penn State closed out on a 6-0 run to cut it to 31-30 at the break.

The Lady Lions scored the first four points of the second half to take a 34-31 advantage and never again relinquished the lead.

The teams traded baskets until Penn State pulled ahead by 11 by knocking down three consecutive three-point shots - two by Maggie Lucas and one by Julia Trogele - to make it 55-44 with 9:03 to play. The Boilermakers would cut it back to single digits, but would get no closer than eight points on three occasions, the last coming on a layup by Antionette Howard at 69-61 with 1:01 on the clock.

Penn State's Alex Bentley led all scorers with 19 points, one of four Lady Lions in double-figures. Three Boilermakers reached double-digits, led by Moses' 17 points. Drey Mingo scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Rayburn chipped in 11 points and a game-high five assists.

There were 15 lead changes in the contest and the scored was tied three times.

The Boilermakers were outrebounded 35-33 and committed 20 turnovers while forcing Penn State into just 12. Purdue outshot the Lady Lions, hitting 42.3 percent of its shots to Penn State's 40 percent, but the Lady Lions connected on 8 of 19 three-pointers and outscored Purdue by 10 points at the free throw line.

The Boilermakers had defeated Indiana 66-62 in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament to advance to the quarterfinal matchup with Penn State.

Purdue now awaits its fate for the postseason. The NCAA Selection Show is Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
