Dive-by-Dive Scoring
MINNEAPOLIS - David Boudia broke three records of note while winning the 1-meter diving, highlighting day two of the Big Ten Conference Championships for Purdue men's swimming and diving Thursday.
Three Boilermaker divers - Boudia, J.P. Perez (fifth) and Danny Cox (eighth) - all qualified for the championship final of the 1-meter diving. With Jimmy Page also scoring points in the consolation final, Purdue totaled 47 points on the 1-meter board Thursday.
Boudia won the event with a score of 467.40 points, breaking his own conference and meet records from 2009 as well as the pool record at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. He finished only 1.25 points shy of his Purdue record from 2010. It was his sixth career Big Ten championship title and the junior also opened his weekend of competition by emerging victorious in the only diving event he did not win in 2010. He bested the second-place finisher by 91.8 points.
"Tonight was especially special because it was my last Big Ten 1-meter competition, and I was there with two other teammates, and our whole crowd of Purdue fans were behind us the whole way," Boudia said. "It's just exciting to end my Big Ten 1-meter career that way."
The Boilermakers also enjoyed some day-two success in the 50 freestyle. Matt Friede and Ben Wachtel both scored points individually by qualifying for the B final of the sprint. Friede finished tied for second in the heat, becoming the first Purdue swimmer to break the 20-second mark this season, doing so in both the morning preliminaries and evening finals. His time of 19.98 in the finals represented a new Purdue freshman record.
Brian Kiel also established a new Purdue freshman benchmark (1:48.23) in the preliminaries of the 200 individual medley. It was also a season-best time for the Boilermakers. New team season-best marks were also posted by Andrew Starr in the 500 free (4:24.50) and the 400 medley relay team (3:13.98) of Kiel, Albert Miller, Brendan Joyce and Wachtel.
The Big Ten Championships continue Friday with preliminaries at Noon (EST).
