No. 5 Women's Golf Fourth In Puerto Rico

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fifth-ranked Purdue women's golf team slipped to fourth place after two rounds of play at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R. The Boilermakers carded a 302 on Monday after opening with a 300 on Sunday. Purdue's two-round total of 602 (+26) trails top-ranked Alabama by 18 strokes.

The Crimson Tide followed up their opening round 286 with a 298 on Monday and sit in first place at eight-over par as a team. Iowa State fired the low team total of the day for second place (300-293=593), while Florida State is third (303-295=598). Georgia is in fifth place (308-302=610), eight strokes behind Purdue.

Texas Tech's Gabriella Dominguez (71-72=143) and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow (73-70=143) are tied for first place at one-under par. Maria Salinas from Florida State and Georgia's Mart Silva Zamora are tied for third at even par. Silva Zamora fired a 68, the low round of the day, to move up the leader board.

The Boilermakers are tightly bunched, all in the top 35 individually. Senior Numa Gulyanamitta recorded the low round of the day for the Boilermakers with a one-over par 73. The native of Thailand is tied for ninth with a score of 148.

Sophomore Paula Reto is just one stroke behind and tied for 13th. Reto opened with a 73 and fired a 76 on Monday for a two-round total of 149. Freshman Alex Stewart is tied for 26th after carding a 75 in the second round. She opened with a 78 and has totaled 153 over two days.

Senior Thea Hoffmeister trails Stewart by one stroke and sophomore Laura Gonzalez-Escallon is just a stroke behind Hoffmeister, who is tied for 28th. Hoffmeister fired a 78 on Monday for a total of 154. Gonzalez-Escallon carded a 79 today and is tied for 35th at 155.

The Boilermakers are the host team for the ninth-annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic while Alabama is the defending champion. The Crimson Tide took home the title last year after recording a three-round total of 872.

The tournament is being played at the River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club and is set up as a par-72, 6,191-yard venue.
