LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Purdue men's and women's track and field teams got things under way at the University of Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Friday, hosted by the Wildcats at Nutter Field House. Boilermaker sophomore Geoff Davis highlighted the first day of competition for the Old Gold and Black, matching a meet record.
Davis tied a meet record for the second-straight weekend in the men's high jump, matching the Rod McCravy Memorial mark of 2.19 meters (7-02.25). He and Louisville sophomore Mike Edwards matched the meet record, which has stood since 2005, but Davis came out on top, clearing the record height on his first attempt to take the lead from Edwards and hold on to it. Davis had three attempts at the NCAA Championship automatic qualifying height of 2.24 meters (7-04.25) for the second meet in a row, but came up short of the mark.
Senior Bill Hardcastle and freshman Dani Bunch had solid showings in the men's and women's weight throws as Hardcastle took eighth place on the men's side with a toss of 17.50 meters (57-05.00), while Bunch was fifth in a star-studded women's field, throwing 19.05 meters (62-06.00). Junior Elizabeth Stover was close to her top mark of the season in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.73 meters (12-02.75) to take fourth place at the meet.
The Boilermakers resume action tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. as senior Emily Breslin is set to compete in the women's high jump. Continue following live results from Kentucky here.
