WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The top-ranked Purdue women's golf team's first round since winning the national championship in May did not quite meet expectations. The Boilermakers fired a 300 (+12) in the opening round of the Fall Preview on Monday and are 23 strokes off the lead.
No. 13 Georgia opened with a 277 (-11), a record-low 18-hole women's tournament score for the Traditions Golf Club, a par-72, 6,271-yard course. Alabama's Brooke Pancake tied the course record with a 65 and leads all individuals.
Purdue was led by senior Thea Hoffmeister who carded a 74 (+2) on Monday to sit in a tie for 30th. The Berlin, Germany, native recorded back-to-back birdies on holes No. 5 and 6, but had two bogeys and a double-bogey to finish with a team-best 74.
Senior Numa Gulyanamitta was playing as Purdue's No. 1 golfer and struggled on the front nine, recording three bogeys. She rebounded with an even-par effort on the back nine that included two birdies and two bogeys. The native of Thailand is tied for 40th with a score of 75.
Newcomer Alex Stewart performed well in her first round of collegiate golf. She also recorded a 75 and is tied for 40th. Stewart got off to a strong start with biridies on holes No. 2 and 4, but bogeyed No. 6, 8 and 9 and double-bogeyed No. 10.
Sophomore Laura Gonzalez-Escallon recorded a four-over par 76 in the opening round and is tied for 51st. Purdue's top-ranked individual, Maude-Aimee LeBlanc, carded an 82 and is tied for 91st. The senior from Sherbrooke, Quebec, recorded an eight on the par-four No. 3 and was unable to get her game back on track.
The Boilermakers have two rounds remaining to improve their position and will tee off Tuesday beginning at 9:45 a.m. ET from hole No. 10.
