Second Round Of NCAA Championships Delayed

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Play was delayed twice due to inclement weather on Wednesday at the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships in Wilmington, N.C., before being stopped for the day at 7:27 p.m. ET. Six teams were on the course when play was halted and will finish round two on Thursday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.

The seventh-ranked Purdue women's golf team had the first tee times of the day and was off the course before the first weather delay at 1:49 p.m. The Boilermakers shot a six-over par 294 in the second round and with a two-round total of 578, trail Southern California (282-288=570) by eight strokes and Alabama (289-288=577) by one. The Boilermakers opened with a 284 on Tuesday and were in third place when the round was stopped.

Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta recorded the Boilermakers' low round on Wednesday, firing a three-under par 69 for a total of 142. It is the third 69 of the season for the junior from Thailand.

Maude-Aimee LeBlanc leads Purdue overall and was tied for third when play was halted. She has a total of 140 after firing a 73 in the second round. LeBlanc opened the tournament with a career-low 67.

Thea Hoffmeister improved by five strokes from round one to round two, recording a 75 on Wednesday after opening with an 80. Freshman Laura Gonzalez-Escallon fired a 77 and has a two-round total of 147. Paula Reto had a strong round until encountering trouble on hole No. 16 where she hit two in the water. The Cape Town, South Africa, native rebounded by making par on the last two holes for an 80. She carded a 74 in the first round for a total of 154.

The NCAA Championships is a four-day, 72-hole tournament and this year the University of North Carolina, Wilmington is playing host. The tournament is being held at the Country Club of Landfall, a par-72, 6,368-yard Pete Dye designed course. Twenty-four teams and six individuals are competing for both the team and individual national titles.

Round three of the tournament will begin approximately one hour after the conclusion of the second round. The Boilermakers will tee off in the afternoon and in all likelihood, will be paired with Southern California and Alabama.
