WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The seventh-ranked Purdue women's golf team has gotten off to a strong start at the 2010 NCAA Championships, firing a four-under par 284 to sit in second place. The Boilermakers are two strokes behind first-place Southern California who scored a 282 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., in the opening round.
Purdue junior Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is in a three-way tie for first after carding a five-under par 67, the lowest round of her career. Southern California's Jennifer Song and Arizona State's Jennifer Johnson also recorded a 67 on Tuesday.
Freshman Laura Gonzalez-Escallon, the Big Ten individual medalist, scored Purdue's second-lowest round of the day with a two-under par 70. She is tied for eighth place.
Junior Numa Gulyanamitta is tied for 30th after recording a one-over par 73 and freshman Paula Reto is tied for 49th with a two-over par 74. Junior Thea Hoffmeister, who finished tied for fourth at the NCAA Central Regional, scored an 80 in the first round and is tied for 116th.
The NCAA Championships is a four-day, 72-hole tournament. Twenty-four teams and six individuals are competing at the Country Club of the Landfall, a par-72, 6,368-yard Pete Dye designed course, for the team and individual national championships.
The Boilermakers will tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday and will once again be paired with Auburn and Texas. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com and the daily recap will be posted to purduesports.com.
