BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team saw another victory turn into a tie on Friday night when Indiana scored a goal with three minutes and change remaining in regulation. The 1-1 tie is the second tie in the Boilermakers' last five matches.
Freshman Kellie Phillips notched her fourth goal of the season, and second in two matches, to put Purdue up 1-0 just four minutes into the second half. Junior Loredana Riverso took a shot that was deflected by Indiana goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell and Phillips was there for the rebound. As the ball dribbled towards the left post, the freshman midfielder made a sliding effort that beat Campbell to the ball.
Indiana continued to pack it in on defense for the next 20 minutes, using the same 4-5-1 formation they employed to tie Purdue, and subsequently beat the Boilermakers in penalty kicks, during last year's NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers could not continue to do so, however, and eventually came out to attack.
In the 87th minute, Carly Samp threaded a ball through the Purdue back line right to a streaking Jocelyn Moses. Moses scored her second goal of the season to tie the match and force overtime.
Indiana dominated the first overtime period, taking three shots and holding Purdue without one. The Boilermakers snapped out of it in the second overtime, but could not convert on any of their five shot opportunities.
In all, Purdue outshot Indiana 19-13 and were led by Riverso's three shots on goal. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jenny Bradfisch racked up five saves in another solid outing. Wit the tie, the Boilermakers keep the Golden Boot trophy.
Purdue (10-4-3) has the rest of the weekend off before hosting Ohio State and Penn State in the last home matches of the season. Action kicks off on Friday versus the Buckeyes at 4 p.m. at the Varsity Soccer Complex.
