Women's 5K Varsity Race Results
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue women's cross country team successfully defended its state title at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Indiana University on Friday. Juniors Kristin Phillips and Katie Morrical paced the Boilermakers, capturing third and fourth place, respectively, as the women totaled just 45 team points.
The junior pair ran outstanding races, crossing the line in 18:02 and 18:05, respectively, with Phillips finishing 15 seconds off the individual champion, Alissa McKaig of Indiana Tech. Sophomore Kristina Krasich took sixth overall, completing the 5K course in 18:31, while rookie Stephanie Bonk was 13th in 19:02. Fellow freshman Katie Conrad shored up the Boilermakers' top five, taking 19th overall in 19:14, and making the difference in the final team score. Archrival Indiana was second in the team standings with 57 points, seeing the major difference in the fifth finishers as Purdue's was 19th, while IU's was 30th.
In the women's open race, Purdue received a career-best performance from sophomore Nicole Kreis, who topped the race in 19:12. She would have finished 18th overall and fifth on the Boilermaker roster, if performed in the women's varsity race. The Boilermakers were stellar throughout the open standings, taking home eight of the top 13 spots, including junior Ashlee Lengacher's second-place showing in 19:39.
On the men's side, the Boilermakers finished a credible sixth place despite the absence of three of their top runners. Senior Steve Swank led Purdue to a 176-point showing as he finished 20th overall in a career-best 8K time of 26:14. Rookie Steve O'Donnell was the Boilermakers' next finisher, clocking a time of 26:34 in his first collegiate outing, while classmate Cale Allen was next at 26:41. Sophomore Chase Kaufman and first-year Dominic DeSantis closed out the Purdue scorers, crossing the line in 26:55 and 27:09.
Indiana captured both the team and individual titles as Brennon Plotner guided the Hoosiers to a 33-point effort with a time of 25:03.
The Boilermakers return to action in two weeks as they travel south to Auburn University on Oct. 4.
