WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team got back on the winning track Friday night at the Varsity Soccer Complex, defeating Rhode Island by the score of 3-1. Freshmen Britney Scott and Alexis Tryba and senior Felicia Schroeder each tallied goals for the Boilermakers.

Purdue was in attack mode for the majority of the evening, unleashing 19 shots and eight shots on goal. Tryba led the team with five shots and freshman Kellie Phillips registered four.

The Boilermakers got the scoring started in the 35th minute when Scott was in the right place at the right time. Sophomore Katie Becker had a good look from 12 yards but her shot hit the post. Scott made a play on the deflection to post her second goal of the season.

Rhode Island would not go down easily, however. In the 45th minute, Stephanie Uri Santos took a cross and timed the shot perfectly. She slid past a Purdue defender and kicked the ball with her outstretched foot to tie the score heading into halftime.

The teams appeared to be heading to overtime for the first 20 minutes of the second half, with back-and-forth play dominating most of the action.

In the 75th minute, the Boilermakers took advantage of another deflected ball off the post. Freshman Lauren Montenegro took a header off a corner kick from freshman Brookley Rogers. Montenegro's shot bounced off the post and right to a waiting Tryba, who tallied her third goal of the season to give Purdue a 2-1 edge.

Senior Felicia Schroeder put the icing on the cake in the 87th minute. Freshman Kellie Phillips gave Schroeder a great look with a well-placed corner kick. Schroeder was standing at the near left side of the net and the goalkeeper never had a chance. It was another smooth corner kick in a season where Purdue has taken advantage of those opportunities.

In the night's other match, Morehead State defeated Indiana State 3-0. The Boilermakers (5-3-1) take on Morehead State (2-4-0) and Indiana State (2-6-0) will play Rhode Island (1-4-1) on Sunday as the Boilermaker Challenge Cup continues.
