AUBURN, Ala. - The Purdue University men's and women's track and field teams earned six first-place finishes and their 17th NCAA Regional qualifying mark of the season at the second day of the 2007 Auburn Tiger Classic, hosted by Auburn University on Saturday.
Senior captain John Porter cleared 5.05 meters (16-06.75) to earn his first NCAA Regional qualifying mark of the outdoor season and claim first place overall. Junior Tyler Miller greatly improved his NCAA Regional mark in the shot put, tossing a new career record of 17.19 meters (56-04.75) to take third place overall. The men's 4x400-meter relay of senior Terrell Thompson, juniors Keith Hopkins and Jh'Rome Tuggle and sophomore Zach Logan managed a first-place showing and time of 3:13.81, despite losing a shoe midway through the race. Senior Justin Stadt wrapped up the men's races with a second-place showing in the 5,000-meter run, running a 14:47.69.
Logan and Tuggle barely missed NCAA Regional qualifiers in the 400-meter dash (47.20), placing fifth and sixth with times of 47.30 and 47.37, and Tuggle grabbed second in the 200-meter dash as well with a mark of 21.60. Senior Brian Williams also fell just short of regional qualification, hurling the javelin 60.86 meters (199-08) to take fourth place overall.
Junior Keith Hopkins and senior Rickey Pinkney grabbed third and fifth place in the 110-meter high hurdles as Hopkins sped to a time of 13.97 and Pinkney posted a 14.10. Junior captain Brian Kaluf placed seventh in the high hurdles with a mark of 14.40.
Freshman Lance Moe completed his first collegiate decathlon with 6,171 points, good for fifth place overall. His top event of the second day was the javelin, where he threw 48.67 meters (159-08) for 569 points.
On the women's side, seniors Corrie Whisner and Laura Farley took home first and second in the 1,500-meter run with respective times of 4:26.69 and 4:27.60, while freshman teammate Kristin Phillips clocked a personal record of 4:29.85 to grab fourth. Senior Lindsey Blaine topped the javelin, out throwing the second-place competitor by nearly six meters with a mark of 48.17 meters (158-00). Junior Astin Steward followed yesterday's third-place finish in the hammer throw with a win in the discus, marking 51.30 meters (168-04).
Junior Sheena James was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put with a mark of 15.34 meters (50-04), while freshman Stacey Wannemacher had the No. 3 collegiate mark, just missing NCAA Regional qualification with a toss of 14.25 meters (46-09). Fellow rookie Katie Morrical set a personal record and earned first place in the 5,000-meter run, posting a time of 17:08.31.
The Purdue ladies had an impressive outing in the 100-meter hurdles as junior captain Leah Kincaid improved her NCAA regional qualifying time with a mark of 13.78, good for fifth place overall, while sophomore Ranay Harvey and senior Lindsey Singleton both clocked personal records, finishing ninth and 10th with times of 14.26 and 14.33. Kincaid also finished fifth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.94 meters (19-06.00), and third in the triple jump at 12.20 meters (40-00.50). Harvey set a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles as well, clocking a 1:01.07 to place fifth. Sophomore Mallory Peck was second in the pole vault with a height of 3.70 meters (12-01.50).
The Boilermakers return to action next weekend at the Missouri Invitational.
