Ames, Iowa - The Purdue University men's and women's track and field teams continued their already impressive season on Friday night at the second day of the Iowa State University Classic, posted several impressive performances, including a new school record in the women's distance medley relay.
Seniors Corrie Whisner and Laura Farley, who were already on the school record board in the event, teamed with sophomore Lauren Scott and freshman Kristin Phillips to smash the previous record by nearly 14 seconds with a time of 11:24.91. The time was good for first place, NCAA provisional qualification and, according to head coach Jack Warner, is one of the top-10 fastest in the country at this point in the season.
Junior captain Leah Kincaid posted a second victory for the women's squad, taking the long jump crown with a mark of 6.14 meters (20-01.75), while also notching the second fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries at 8.43 seconds. Joining her in tomorrow's semifinals will be senior teammate Lindsey Singleton and sophomore Ranay Harvey, who crossed the line in 8.92 and 8.86, respectively.
Sophomore Mallory Peck continued her high-flying ways in the pole vault, finishing second with a height of 4.00 meters (13-01.50) for her second straight mark of at least 13 feet.
On the men's side, freshman Jonathan Pullum notched a sixth-place showing in the 35-pound weight throw, heaving it 19.22 meters (63-00.75), while sophomore Jh'Rome Tuggle nearly climbed in to the Purdue record books in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.65 seconds, just 0.18 seconds out of the school's all-time top five in the event. Fellow sophomore Nolan Petties earned 11th place in the long jump with a mark of 7.13 meters (23-04.75), while the Boilers sent a trio of men to tomorrow's 60-meter high hurdle semifinals as senior Rickey Pinkney and juniors Keith Hopkins and Brian Kaluf ran respective times of 7.99, 8.04 and 8.13.
The action restarts tomorrow morning at 9:25 a.m. with the women's 3,000-meter run.
