Purdue Women In Third After Day One At Big Ten Indoor Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Purdue University women's track and field team piled up 35 points in the first day of competition at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Illinois on Saturday. The Boilers stand in third place overall, just one point behind second-place Michigan and 24 points behind first-place Minnesota.

Senior Lindsey Singleton earned the Boilermakers' first points of the championship, finishing seventh in the pentathlon with a career-best total of 3,644 points. She clocked a time of 8.86 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, cleared 1.61 meters (5-03.25) in the high jump, marked 11.01 meters (36-01.50) in the shot put, leapt 5.37 meters (17-07.50) in the long jump and raced to a time of 2:29.54 in the 800-meter run. Freshman Rachel Stalzer finished just outside the points in 11th place with 3,433 points, and posted an impressive third-place showing in the 800 (2:20.05).

The Boilermakers continued to gather bunches of points throughout the day led by sophomore Mallory Peck, who claimed her first Big Ten Championship and set a conference meet record in the pole vault. Her jump of 4.11 meters (13-05.75) is a career best and fractured the previous mark, held by former Boilermaker Ebbie Metzinger, by 0.11 meters. Junior captain Leah Kincaid, classmate Sheena James and senior Corrie Whisner collected third-place showings in the long jump, shot put and 3,000-meter run, respectively. Kincaid jumped 6.05 meters (19-10.25), James threw the shot 15.70 meters (51-06.25), breaking the school record for the third time this season, and Whisner clocked a time of 9:34.71.

Kincaid also earned a spot in tomorrow's 60-meter hurdle finals, racing to a time of 8.48 in the prelims. Also advancing to tomorrow's finals was senior captain Laura Farley, who notched the third-fastest preliminary time and career-best in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.63.

The meet is scheduled to resume tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 10 a.m. with the 20-pound weight throw.
