MIAMI - Sophomore Katie Mitchell (Crown Point, Ind.) hit for the cycle, including a seventh-inning RBI single, but could not lift the Boilermakers to a victory in their Friday evening contest against Florida International. The Golden Panthers won the game 9-5, despite Mitchell making school history.
Junior Ashley Hall (Noblesville, Ind.) drew a two-out walk in the final stanza. She then advanced to second on a single to center field by freshman Kelsey Haupert (Olympia, Wash.), before scoring on Mitchell's single. A fly ball to right field ended the rally and the game.
The Boilermakers recorded two hits in the opening stanza, including a two-out double by Mitchell, but could not manage a run.
FIU scored first with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the inning. A Monique White triple drove in the first. A Purdue miscue put the next batter on and allowed White to score.
Senior Erika Peterson (Irvine, Calif.) singled and scored to put Purdue on the board in the second. With Peterson at second after a sacrifice, freshman Ashley Barr (Meridian, Idaho) laid down a bunt, but the pitcher overthrew first base, allowing Peterson to score on the play.
A double steal, involving a close play at the plate, gave the Golden Panthers their third run of the game.
Mitchell evened the score in the third inning with a two-run home run to left center. The dinger, the sophomore's second of the day, drove in freshman Kelsey Haupert (Olympia, Wash.), who walked to lead off the inning.
A Kim Rodriguez solo home run gave FIU back the lead in the third. A Deomni Murray single in the fourth made it 5-3.
The Boilermakers threatened in the fifth, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single by sophomore Candace Curtis (Danville, Calif.), but could not score.
Mitchell set up another run for the Boilermakers with a one-out triple in the sixth. A two-out single to left by Peterson drove her in, making it a one-run game.
The Golden Panthers put up for runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth to pull away. A bases-loaded triple by Murray did most of the damage.
Purdue scored five runs on 10 hits, including a 4-for-4 day at the plate from Mitchell. Peterson also tallied multiple hits in the contest, with a 2-for-4 outing including a double. The Boilermakers also left 14 runners on base in the game. FIU scored nine runs on nine hits.
Desiree Fink earned the win after tossing two innings of relief for the Panthers. Sophomore Ashley DiDomenico (Youngstown, Ohio) was saddled with the loss in a complete-game effort.
The Boilermakers return to action at 9 a.m. when they take on No. 11 Stanford.
