WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue soccer finished its regular season Friday with a 2-1 win over instate rival Indiana. The victory lifted the Boilermakers' overall record to 13-4-3 and 6-3-1 in the Big Ten, giving them third place.
Purdue's 13-regular season wins are the most in program history.
The loss dropped Indiana to 9-6-4 and 5-4-1 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers began their Big Ten season 5-0-1 and were tied for first last week with Penn State, but dropped their last four decisions with only one goal to their name.
Both of Purdue's goals were provided by Jessica Okoroafo, giving her seven for the season. The sophomore first scored in the sixth minute off an assist from Christy Riggle, then provided the eventual game-winner in the 47th minute off corner kick assists from Parrissa Eyorokon and Shauna Stapleton.
Okoroafo's multi-goal game was her second of the season and fourth of her career.
The Hoosiers cut the lead to one in the 72nd minute on a goal from Christie Kotynski with an assist from Carrie DeFreece.
The Boilermakers outshot Indiana, 15-13, and edged them in corner kicks, 5-4. Okoroafo paced the team with six shots.
Lauren Mason played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves while allowing the one goal. Kotynski led all Hoosiers with five shots.
Purdue leads its all-time series with IU, 8-1-1, and has not lost since their inaugural meeting in 1999. Today's two-goal effort was only the second time in series history either Purdue or Indiana had scored more than one goal. The last time Purdue scored two goals against IU was in 2003, winning 2-1 at Bloomington. Also, all ten meetings have been decided by one goal.
The Boilermakers' next match will be in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, which begins next Thursday, Nov. 2. As the No. 3 seed, Purdue will play the No. 6 seed at 10:30 a.m. EST, but its opponent has yet to be determined. Three more conference matches remain on Friday's Big Ten schedule.
