WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Jennie Moppert's gold team recorded a mild upset over Erin Otagaki's black team, 2-1, Saturday at the Varsity Soccer Complex. The winning goal was knocked in by sophomore Kalie Grambeau on an assist from team co-captain Rebecca Robison in the 42nd minute.

The black team, which was stacked with veteran talent, outshot the gold, 11-5, but converted just once. All 11 shots were taken by the combination of Lauren Sesselmann, Jayme-Lee Biamonte and newcomer Jessica Okoroafo, who led all players with five shots.

Gold took the game's first lead after sophomore Jill Sarbaugh received a diagonal from redshirt freshman Tricia Krombach and slipped past junior Lauren Mason in the goal box. Mason left the pipes to cut down on Sarbaugh's angle, but the Carmel, Ind., native used her agility to trip up the charging netminder.

Gold held the lead for eight minutes until Sesselmann buried a shot into the right corner from 18-yards out, receiving the assist from redshirt junior Chelsea Ferrie. Sesselmann, who missed all of last season due to an injury, held up well on the field, playing all 50 minutes and taking three shots.

Black's game-tying goal pushed the momentum in their favor for the remainder of the first period, but freshman goalkeeper Deanna Eff made four clutch saves, picking off both Sesselmann and Biamonte twice within the final nine minutes.

The Black team was equally potent on defense, limiting gold to just one shot in the final minutes of the first half.

The two squads remained locked at 1-1, with neither able to take a shot until Grambeau connected on her game-winner past freshman goalkeeper Jenny Bradfisch.

The Black team had several opportunities to tie the match, but were derailed each time down the field by the Gold team's aggressive defense, which was anchored by Kate Mills, Christy Riggle, Krombach and last year's leading scorer Parrissa Eyorokon. The Black squad's best look at the net was an Okoroafo header that was snared by Eff at the right post with three minutes remaining.

The Boilermakers play their first exhibition Thursday, Aug. 18 against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the IPFW Soccer Showcase. The Panthers, who defeated Purdue last season, 2-1, are coached by Michael Moynihan, the older brother of Boilermaker assistant coach Sue Moynihan.
