WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue outshot and outplayed Wright State for 90 minutes Sunday at the Varsity Soccer Complex; however, the home team was held scoreless until the final minute when freshman Jordyn Shaffer headed in the game-winner.
Shaffer's first career goal was scored off a Kim Comisar corner kick in the 89th minute. Comisar's ball landed in the goal box, where it was batted around several times before the 5-2 midfielder headed it past Wright State goalkeeper Steph Comisar.
Shaffer's shot was her team-best fourth of the game. Parrissa Eyorokon, Addie Moppert and Rebecca Robison also were among the team's offensive leaders, each finishing the match with three shots.
The 1-0 triumph boosted Purdue's record to 4-2-0, while the loss dropped Wright State to 2-4-0.
"Overall it was a good performance; the team played tighter than it did Friday and we didn't give up any counter opportunities," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "I think we need to work on our finishing. We were within the 18-yard box a number of times and turned the corners well, but we need to provide quality services to make things easier."
The last-minute goal was a tough ending for Steph Comisar, the younger sister of Purdue's Kim Comisar. The Raider goalkeeper played a complete game between the pipes, making nine saves, while facing 21 shots.
Kim attempted to challenge her sister twice. Her first shot sailed wide, and her second was stuffed by Steph at the left post.
In comparison, the Purdue goalkeeping tandem of starter Lauren Mason and second-half substitute Maureen Carey faced only seven shots, and were not forced to make a save. Forward Desire Morris led Wright State with four shots.
Purdue's defensive quartet of Kristin Lichtenberg, Kira Bilecky, Christy Riggle and Kristin Hetzel did not give Wright State's four-woman attack line any chance to convert, as it regularly intercepted the ball at midfield. The defense also helped clear out two Raider corner kicks.
The Boilermakers launched a season-high 11 corner kicks, seven of which came in the second half. Shauna Stapleton took the first four corners and Comisar recorded the final seven.
The Purdue record for most corner kicks in a match is 17, which it registered on Nov. 15, 2002 against Eastern Illinois.
The Boilermakers play host to Iowa on Friday, Sept. 17, in the Big Ten season opener for both clubs. The match kicks off at 4 p.m. The Hawkeyes will be looking for some measure of revenge, losing 4-1 to Purdue last year in Iowa City.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers, who also lost to Purdue at home last season, visit West Lafayette Sunday at 1 p.m. Both Big Ten matches will be broadcast on 1410 WLAS-AM and over the world wide web at purduesports.com. Steve Hall and Andrew Staley begin their broadcast 10 minutes before game time.
