WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team benefitted from a 3-for-3 day at the plate by freshman Spencer Ingaldson, propelling the the Boilermakers to a 4-3 win in the night cap of a Mother's Day double header over Michigan. The Wolverines won the first game, 4-2, scoring two runs in the final inning to claim the victory.
Purdue is 23-22 after the Sunday double header, 12-11 in the Big Ten. Michigan is 25-20 overall and 13-10 in conference play.
In Game Two, Ingaldon (Rapid City, S.D.) reached base with two singles and his fourth double of the season and scored three runs as the Boilermakers held off a late Wolverine rally. Ingladson scored in the second, fourth and sixth innings to help Purdue build a 4-0 lead in the game.
Ingaldson is now batting .400 in 17 games this season. The freshman catcher has picked up 11 hits in his last 17 at-bats over six starts, good for a .647 batting average during that span.
With a 4-0 advantage heading into the final inning, Michigan put together four singles to plate two runs off Boilermaker starting pitching Brian Karpel (Lakewood, Ohio). Jason Driscoll (Mishawaka, Ind.) came in from the Purdue bullpen and put out the fire, posting his team-leading fifth save of the season.
Karpel, a senior, was credited with the win, improving his season record to 4-3. The left-hander allowed three runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Karpel walked one batter and recorded four strikeouts.
Ingaldson scored the winning run in the sixth when he doubled to left with one down and crossed the plate on a single by freshman Eric Osborn (Fishers, Ind.). Osborn leads the Boilermakers with 33 RBI this season.
Purdue grabbed the early lead by scoring in the first inning off Wolverine starter Michael Penn on a single up the middle by senior Simon Klink (Auburn, Ind.), the spotlighted senior on Sunday's radio broadcast. Klink's base hit scored junior Mike Coles (Hammond, Ind.), who had led off the inning with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Mitch Hilligoss (Windsor, Ill.).
In the second inning, Ingaldson came around to score an RBI single to left by senior Mitch Koester (Effingham, Ill.), the hero of Saturday's Purdue win. Ingaldson had singled in the inning, and singled again in the fourth to set up the Boilermakers' third run. With the Purdue catcher on second base, junior Andy Dahl (Fair Oaks, Calif.) picked up the RBI with a base hit through the left side of the Michigan infield.
The Boilermakers dropped Game One of the Sunday twinbill when the Wolverines scored two runs in the seventh inning. A single and stolen base by Eric Rose set up the winning run, scored on a double by Chris Getz. Getz later scored when Kyle Bohm hit into a fielder's choice, beating out a potential double play.
Trailing 2-0 heading to the bottom of the third, Purdue tied the score with one swing as Klink launched his third home run of the season over the left field wall. Klink's blast scored Coles in front of him as the Purdue centerfielder had doubled to left with one out in the inning.
Freshman Andrew Groves (North Liberty, Ind.) was hit with the loss, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings. Groves (1-2) surrendered four hits in the outting and struck out one. Freshman Dan Sattler (West Lafayette, Ind.) started on the mound for Purdue and pitched 4.0+ innings, yielding two runs on four hits while striking out five.
Through three games in the weekend series, four Boilermakers are batting over .400 against Michigan pitching. Koester has the hot bat, picking up four hits in six at-bats and driving in four runs. Klink in 5-for9 in the series while Osborn is has four hits in eight at-bats and Coles is 5-for-12.
The Boilermakers and Wolverines conclude the Big Ten series with a businessman's special on Monday afternoon. First pitch for the finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lambert Field.
