WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue track and field teams defeated Indiana State on Friday night at Lambert Fieldhouse, 166-152. With the win, the Boilermakers hang on to the Edmonds Cup for the eighth-straight year and remain undefeated Indiana State. On the night, the Boilermakers tallied 27 personal records en route to the win.
"Tonight's meet was awesome," said Purdue head coach Lissa Olson. "With Indiana State, there's always a lot of emotion and pride on both sides of the track. I think they really enjoy coming in and going against a Big Ten team and being truly competitive with us. And for us, we have a lot of pride because we don't want to lose to a non-Big Ten school in our home facility. So, there's always a lot of headed competition and emotion."
On the men's side for the Boilermakers, senior Hence "Pooh" Williams tallied a pole vault jump of 5.36m (17' 7") for a four-inch personal record and an NCAA provisional cut mark.
In the mile, senior Kyle Orender and freshman Dan Mathers both tallied PR's and finished first and third.
For the women pole vaulters, senior Amy Spellmeyer won the event, her first win since returning from injury, and the depth of the team tallied six season-best jumps. Spellmeyer's jump just missed the NCAA provisional cut mark.
For the heptathletes, Shanna Carter tallied three personal bests, Jan Eichenauer a PR in the high jump and Desiree Jones tallied a record in the 60-m hurdles.
In the women's mile race, Christan Bahler finished first with Laura Farley close behind in second. Bahler tallied a substantial PR, while Farley finished faster than her time last week for a season-best. Kaleen Cappel finished fourth with a personal best, as well.
In the throwing events, sophomore Nedzad Mulabegovic finished first in the shot put with a toss of 18.75m (61' 6 ? "). Scott Hecht gave the Boilermakers a 1-2 punch with the second-place finish with a throw of 17.53m (57' 6 ?").
In the weight throw, sophomore Igor Kirin returned for his first meet in over a year after double-knee surgery and tallied the first-place finish with a toss of 19.75m (64' 9 ?"). Junior Keith McBride was second and Scott Hecht was third with a PR toss of 19.12m (62' 8 ?").
In the men's long jump, sophomore Jamar Green fell only 1 cm short of the NCAA provisional cut mark with a lifetime-best jump of 7.54m (24' 9"). Sophomore Kern Woods came in third with an indoor lifetime-best jump of 7.07m (23' 2 ?").
Senior Prentice Stovall reset his own Purdue record in the 60-m hurdles with a time of 7.88, one hundredth faster than his time last weekend.
The Purdue men also finished 1-2-3 in the 60-meter dash with junior Jacques Reeves, sophomore Kenneth Baxter and Stovall.
Some members of the Boilermaker squad will return to the oval next weekend when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Invitational.
