Boilermaker Men Defeat Indiana 194-182; Women Place Second

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's track and field team defeated Indiana 194-182 to claim a point in the Titan Series at the Indiana Quad meet on Sunday in Bloomington. The Boilermakers also topped third place Air Force with 153 points and Indiana State with 147.

The women's track and field team placed second in its quad behind the Hoosiers, 217-192. The Old Gold and Black defeated third place Indiana State with 113 points, and fourth place Air Force with 102.

Things got off to a close start in men's action as the Boilermakers got out to a close 45-43 lead following the high jump. Ryan Fitzpatric and Joe Thomas went one and two with respective marks of 2.16m/7-1.00 and 2.06m/6-9.25.

The men's 4x100m-relay team comprised of Prentice Stovall, Kenneth Baxter, Jamar Green and Jacques Reeves ran in a NCAA provisional and season-best time of 39.82. With Indiana close on its heels, this kept the meet close with a score of 56-55.

Stovall and Reeves continued their success in individual sprint and hurdle races. The duo went one and two respectively in the 100m dash in 10.55 and 10.58. Stovall won the 110m hurdles in 14.06, while Reeves won the 200m in 20.87. With 12 events scored, the Old Gold and Black remained in first with 119 points over Indiana's 117.

The throwing events secured Purdue's reign at the top. Keith McBride threw an Indiana Meet record of 60.45m/198-4.00 in the hammer throw. Nedzad Mulabegovic and Nick Swathwood went one and two in the shot with respective throws of 18.21m/59-9.00 and 17.34m/56-10.75. Swathwood also won the discus with a throw of 52.91m/173-7.00.

Donnie Fellows' win the 5,000m run with a time of 14:23.97 secured the victory for Purdue.

Whereas the men triumphed in the sprint and hurdle events, those were the ones that caused problems for the women. The Hoosiers won the 100m, 200m and 400m dashes, as well as the 100m hurdles. But Shannon Kelley had had enough. She won the 400m hurdles in 1:02.08 to earn valuable points for the Boilermakers.

Purdue's juggernaut of talent in the middle distance and distance events proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Kim Jordan won the 800m run in 2:10.52, while Lindsay Zinn ran a close second in the 1,500m run in 4:31.89. Barbara Wenger and Ann Stechshulte continued their dominance in the 3,000m steeplechase and the 5,000m run with respective times of 10:40.52 and 16:52.03.

Ebbie Metzinger picked up a NCAA automatic mark of 4.15m/13-7.50 in the pole vault.

The Boilermakers completed action with wins in the shot put, hammer throw and javelin throw. Tiffany Britten won the shot with a throw of 13.76m/45-1.75. Serene Ross won both the hammer and javelin with NCAA marks. She threw the javelin an automatic mark of 51.60m/166-0.00, and the hammer a provisional mark of 56.80m/186-4.00.
