WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue seniors Lindsay Lange and Heather Zielinski were named Thursday to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District V Women's At-Large First Team, while senior swimmer Lisa Dolansky was named to its second team.
Lange, an advertising major, led Purdue's swimming team to a regular season record of 7-3-1 and a fifth-place showing at the Big Ten Championships. During the course of the season, Lange established a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and scored four honorable mention All-America citations at the NCAA Championships. She also was part of the school record breaking 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams, and was the Big Ten's 100 breast champion.
A native of Oak Harbor, Ohio, Lange finished her distinguished career after recording a 2004 Olympic Trial qualifying time in the 100-meter breast at the U.S. Senior National Championships in Indianapolis. Lange's success in the classroom this year resulted in her receiving Academic All-Big Ten recognition and the Purdue Athletics Department's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award. In addition, Lange was named Purdue's female Big Ten Medal of Honor winner.
Zielinski, an industrial engineering major, also was honored by the Purdue Athletics Department as a distinguished scholar-athlete. In addition to this academic achievement, Zielinski has earned Academic All-Big Ten laurels.
Zielinski and her teammates are currently in action at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships hosted by Purdue. She is tied for 39th place heading into Thursday's third round of play with a score of 157 (+13). After shooting a first-round score of 81 on Tuesday, she rebounded with a 76 in the second round and has pushed her club into seventh place.
During the regular season, Zielinski averaged 76.4 strokes per round to rank second on the team. She placed among the top 25 in six different tournaments, including a fourth-place showing at the Landfall Tradition in November.
Dolansky, a movement and sports science major, was placed on the district's second team, but was as instrumental as teammate Lange in leading the Purdue swimming team to one of its best seasons ever.
This past season Dolansky was a member of school record-breaking relay squads in the 200 and 800 freestyle and the 200 medley. Dolansky, who owns two individual school records, earned three honorable mention All-America awards at the 2003 NCAA Championships, bringing her career total to five.
An academic All-Big Ten selection, Dolansky was a member of last semester's Dean's List and was selected as a distinguished scholar-athlete by the Purdue Athletics Department.
