A former Purdue second baseman, Sam Mercier is in her second season as an assistant coach. A 1999 graduate, she earned her B.A. in communication-advertsing. A walkon and four-year starter, Mercier finished her career with the Boilermakers as a three-time team Most Valuable Player, captain, and Defensive Player of the Year. She is the school?s career leader in games played, at-bats, hits, doubles and assists. A four-time All-Big Ten selection, she was also voted All-Mideast Region twice.
During her career, Mercier was ranked as one of the "toughest players to strike out" by the NCAA with only 17 strike outs in 769 at-bats.
Mercier was drafted by the Tampa Bay Firestixx of the Women's Professional Softball League with the 44th pick overall in 1999, but passed in order to take the opportunity to stay at Purdue. Her duties with the Boilermakers include strength and conditioning, recruiting, hitting and defense.
A native of California, Mercier grew up in San Clemente with her parents, Frank and Susan.
