Connor Mahoney-Ashberry is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Purdue track & field and cross country program in 2023-24. He leads the Boilermaker distance and cross country runners.
Mahoney-Ashberry comes to Purdue from Alabama, where he spent seven years as an assistant. He brings more than 10 years of coaching experience to West Lafayette.
At Alabama from 2017-2023, Mahoney-Ashberry coached 31 All-Americans, numerous NCAA Preliminary Round qualifiers and 11 NCAA Championships qualifiers. He helped lead his athletes to four individual SEC cross country championships and multiple All-SEC honors across nine different distance events.
He helped the Crimson Tide to an SEC indoor men’s team championship in 2018 and a men’s cross country conference crown in 2022. Mahoney-Ashberry was a part of the Alabama staff that was named the USTFCCCA John McDonnel Program of the Year.
While balancing the need for high-level training and the health and safety of student-athletes, Mahoney-Ashberry helped lead, monitor and coordinate training and practice sessions throughout his tenure at UA. He analyzed performances and aided and taught athletes in their individual training plans.
Mahoney-Ashberry also assisted in recruiting for both the men’s and women’s programs throughout his tenure. He also helped coordinate the development and marketing of the program and served as an assistant camp director.
Prior to Alabama, Mahoney-Ashberry spent the summer and fall of 2016 at Shorter University as an assistant coach, where he coached the NCAA Division II cross country national runner-up. Along with working with distance runners, he coached multi-event athletes in endurance-based disciplines and recruited athletes in all event areas.
At Campbell University from 2013-16, Mahoney-Ashberry helped the team to a Big South men’s cross country championship in 2015. He also coordinated recruiting, arranged and managed team travel and assisted with hosting home events.
A graduate of Campbell University with a degree in sports management, Mahoney Ashberry has USATF Level I certification and Level II certification as both a youth coach and an endurance coach.
