Purdue Upsets No. 18 Michigan
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Brad Miller scored eight of his 15 points in the final two minutes, including the go-ahead three-point play, to lead Purdue to a 67-58 victory over 18th-ranked Michigan in a Big Ten game.
It was the second win over a ranked team this week for Purdue (15-10, 10-5 Big Ten) and moved the Boilermakers into sole possession of second-place in the conference. Purdue beat Indiana, 89-87, in overtime last Tuesday.
Chad Austin, who hit the game-winning basket with .6 remaining in overtime at Indiana, led Purdue with 25 points. Freshman Jaraan Cornell added 17 for the Boilermakers, who avenged an 89-65 loss at Ann Arbor on January 16.
"It was a gutsy win...the kids played hard and dove all over the floor," said Purdue coach Gene Keady. "In the second half, Chad hit some three-pointers. It was just a very hard-fought game and we're still alive for an NCAA berth."
The loss was the fourth in five games for Michigan (17-9, 7-7), which fell into seventh-place in the conference. Robert Traylor led the Wolverines with 18 points.
"Purdue played with a lot of confidence today," said Michigan coach Steve Fisher. "They're a very talented team. They, unlike us, are finding ways to win and making plays to win games. We haven't been able to do that."
A three-point play by Miller with 1:52 remaining snapped a 53-53 tie. After Michigan's Maceo Baston missed a dunk attempt, Cornell converted a pair of free throws with 1:32 left to increase Purdue's lead to 58-53.
After a layup by Michigan's Brandun Hughes, Miller scored on a dunk with 62 seconds left to restore Purdue's five-point advantage. Miller converted three free throws and Austin added two in the final 34 seconds to seal the win.
"If you want to win some tight games you have to make some plays when the game is on the line," said Fisher. "We need to right the ship and get a win Wednesday against Minnesota."
Austin scored 15 of his points in the first half when Purdue held a 33-31 lead. The Boilermakers increased the lead to 42-35 early in the second half.
A 15-7 run gave Michigan a 50-49 lead. A block and dunk by Traylor with 4:35 left capped the run.
Louis Bullock had 13 points and Hughes and Maurice Taylor added 10 points apiece for Michigan.
