What is NIL Go?

NIL Go is an online platform created by the College Sports Commission to evaluate whether third-party NIL deals are made with the purpose of using a student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation.

What kind of deals need to be disclosed to NIL Go?

Any NIL deal that is over $600 must be disclosed to NIL Go.

What kind of promotions are prohibited?

Student-athletes may not enter ian NIL contract to receive compensation for the advertisement, endorsement or promotion of the following:

  • Gambling 
  • Alcohol
  • Sports betting
  • Performance Enhancing Supplements
  • Controlled Substances
  • Marijuana
  • Tobacco
  • Any Product Inconsistent with Values & Mission of the University or Reflects Adversely on the University or Athletics.

May international student-athletes utilize NIL?

International student-athletes should NOT enter into any NIL agreements without guidance from the Purdue Compliance Office (compliance@lsu.edu) and Purdue’s International Services (iss@purdue.edu) to discuss and prevent any complications with student visa/immigration issues.

For which types of NIL activities may I partner with Purdue student-athletes?

Do I need to provide a 1099 form for the student-athlete of which I'm contracting?

Yes. Student-athletes are to be considered contractual 1099 employees.

Can I use Purdue trademarks and logos for athlete NIL sponsorships?  

Only Purdue corporate sponsors and licensed partners are allowed to use Purdue logos, marks, phrases, or slogans in NIL activities. This means if you’re wearing Purdue-branded apparel (even team-issued gear) in NIL content, or if the content comes from INFLCR or any other source, it must follow these rules and cannot be altered. You can always wear plain gold and black apparel without Purdue logos/marks in your NIL activities. Can I provide an NIL deal to a student-athlete based on their performance?  

No.  

May businesses compensate a student-athlete for their NIL when the student-athlete is engaged in official team activities? 

No. If a student-athlete is participating in a competition, fan event or other activity sponsored or organized by Purdue Athletics, the student-athlete may not be compensated for his autograph, photo or other service. 

When do businesses compensate a student-athlete after an NIL contract has been signed?  

The compensation time frame to a student-athlete for the use of their NIL is determined by the two parties of the NIL contract. All NIL contracts must be disclosed to NIL Go before the contract is signed and before any compensation is provided to ensure compliance with state law and university policies. An NIL deal cannot be executed with logo/trademark/copyright/facility until written permission is received. FAQs For Student-Athletes  

What is the difference between Influencer (INFLCR) and NIL Go?  

The INFLCR app is designed to connect student-athletes to brands and help student-athletes access and create content while NIL Go is primarily for disclosing deals over $600.

What is the Boilermaker Marketplace?  

The Boilermaker Marketplace is Purdue's hub that allows supporters to access student-athletes and offer NIL opportunities. The marketplace gives Purdue fans, brands, and sponsors the ability to browse, book, pitch, and pay Boilermaker student-athletes for NIL activities.

Do I have to disclose in-kind gifts?  

Yes, all deals over $600, whether it be in-kind gifts or cash, need to be disclosed. 

I am a student-athlete who has been approached about an NIL deal. What do I do? 

  • NIL deals are to be disclosed through the NIL Go - nilgo.com.
  • An NIL deal cannot be executed with logo/mark/trademark/copyright/facility until written permission is received. Any questions on the disclosure process can be directed to the Daniel Picioski via email - dpicios@purdue.edu.

May student-athletes use branded attire or material during promotional events (e.g., student-athlete filming endorsement ad while wearing a Purdue hat)? 

Student-athletes may not enter into a contract for use of their NIL that uses the licensed marks or logos of the University UNLESS the school has provided written permission in advance of signing the NIL contract.

Permission is granted or declined during the disclosure process. 

When do businesses compensate a student-athlete after an NIL contract has been signed?

Do I have to pay taxes on my NIL deals?  

Yes, NIL income is taxable. Income must be reported on your tax return, and this includes free or gifted items from quid pro quo transactions.  

Do I need an LLC?  

LLCs are not required but may be beneficial for certain student-athletes. Consult with a financial advisor to determine if forming an LLC is the appropriate choice for you.  

If I enter into an NIL deal before my collegiate eligibility begins, do I need to disclose it?  

If you enter a deal in high school, you should be aware of your high school guidelines on NIL deal disclosure. Once the student-athlete transitions to college, disclosure requirements will vary by institution. At Purdue, student-athletes are required to disclose any NIL opportunities at the time of enrollment.
