At the No. 5 singles position, Velasquez picked up a big win versus opponent Niels Hoffman of #22 USC: 3-6, 7-5. 12-10. He improves his record to a winning 5-3 for the spring, and 9-7 for his overall collegiate career in singles.
  • Continuing their Big Ten opening weekend on Sunday, sophomore Nour Fathalla played an outstanding match, defeating No. 57 Spencer Johnson 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-3. This is the highest-ranked win of his career, setting him up for more strong Big Ten competition this spring, especially as this was his first Big Ten win of the season.
  • Overall, the Boilermakers (4-7) fell to a tough No. 26 UCLA (8-3), with a score of 1-6.
  • Fathalla’s match was won in tiebreak fashion, starting down 3-4, as he pushed through to take the next three straight points, gaining the 6-4 lead, and later winning the match 8-6.

LOOKING AHEAD

  • Purdue will be looking for its first road victory of the season, as Purdue first travels to Seattle to take on Washington. Washington is currently 6-8 on the season (3-3 at home, 1-2 away, and 0-2 Big Ten). Last year, although the match was unfinished, then-freshman Maj Premzl played Soham Purohit, resulting in a tight score of 7-6(5), 3-6, 4-2.
  • The Boilermakers close out the weekend playing No.45 Oregon on Sunday, on the Ducks’ home courts. Oregon owns an impressive season record of 10-3 (8-0 at home, 1-2 away, and 1-1 in Big Ten). In last year’s showing, Purdue beat Oregon 4-2, with it being only the second time the two had met.
