WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women's swimming & diving joins its comrades from around the conference in Ohio's state capital this week for the annual seven-session showcase that is the Big Ten Championships, ushering in the start of championship season.

Action is set for Wednesday evening through Saturday at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, which is serving as the host site of the women's championships for the fifth time (first since 2018). Swimming prelims begin at 10 a.m. and diving prelims at noon. Finals sessions begin at 5 p.m. with the diving consolation final. The meet begins Wednesday at 5 p.m. with a pair of relays plus the exhibition team diving event.

The Boilermakers have set five team records this season and Avery Worobel eclipsed both freshman records in the springboard diving events. Olympian Daryn Wright won bronze in platform diving (her Olympic event) last season and will be among the favorites to take home the Big Ten title in the event this season.

Fifth-year student-athletes Masy Folcik and Kathryn Ackerman both have an opportunity to become five-year scorers at Big Tens. Folcik is Purdue's longest-tenured swimmer, joining the program in the fall of 2020 and scoring at every Big Tens since. Ackerman joined the Boilermakers this fall as a graduate transfer from Michigan, where she scored in all three of her individual events all four years. As a four-time A finalist in the 400 IM, she has finished fourth three times. She also won gold (2021) and bronze (2022) medals with the Wolverines' 800 freestyle relay teams as an underclassman.

Five other Boilermakers have an opportunity to become four-year scorers at Big Tens this week – a group that includes Mahala Erlandson, Madeline Greaves, Maggie Love, Sophie McAfee and Jenna Sonnenberg.

McAfee is 9-for-9 and Wright is 6-for-6 in career top-10 finishes at the Big Ten Championships. They are Purdue's top active career scoring leaders at the meet. A year ago, Kate Mouser became Purdue's first freshman swimmer since 2016 to score in all three of her individual events. Mouser went on to join Folcik at USA Swimming's U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis.

With Purdue hosting last season at the Morgan J, Burke Aquatic Center, Indiana bested Ohio State by half a point -- the tightest margin in conference history -- to end the Buckeyes' streak of five consecutive Big Ten titles (since 2019). No. 7 Indiana, No. 10 Michigan, No. 12 USC, No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 23 UCLA and No. 24 Minnesota are all ranked among the national top 25 in the CSCAA coaches poll this month. UCLA and USC debut at the Big Ten Championships this week, bringing the field of teams to 14 – making it the largest ever for Big Tens.

ANNUAL DIVING MEDALISTS
The Boilermakers have produced a medalist in platform diving at the last seven Big Ten Championships dating back to 2018. Purdue has racked up 100-plus points – 109 in 2022, 102 in 2023, 101 in 2024 – in the event each of the last three years while accounting for at least four 10 finishers.
Sophie McAfee and Daryn Wright have both scored in all three diving events every season they've competed at Big Tens. Jenna Sonnenberg also achieved the distinction in 2022. McAfee led the team in scoring in her underclassman years and finished second to Wright last year. She reached the 200-point benchmark in just three years and Wright has an opportunity to do the same this week. Since the scoring format was changed in time for the 2016 championship season, only diver Emily Bretscher (team-record 300 points from 2018-22) had previously reached the 200-point mark while competing at five Big Tens.
Purdue won four consecutive springboard consolation finals across 2022 and 2023, with a freshman accomplishing the feat both years – McAfee in 2022 and Wright in 2023. McAfee won the platform consolation final last year to keep her top-10 streak alive.
