#9 Volleyball Suffers 5th Set Heartbreaker

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 9 Purdue volleyball team’s winning streak was snapped in its first fifth set loss of the season, dropping a 2-3 heartbreaker to Oregon (25-23, 23-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-17) after having two match points in Set 5.

With the result, Purdue suffered just the fourth loss of the season, moving to 22-4 (13-3 Big Ten) while Oregon improves to 15-11 (6-10 Big Ten).

Next week, a midweek top-15 match is set for Wednesday, with Purdue taking on No. 11 Wisconsin Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. The match will be followed by Purdue’s senior night versus Northwestern on Sunday, November 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET, also airing on Big Ten Network. It will be the final match of the regular season inside Holloway Gymnasium for the Boilermakers.

Boiler Notes

  • Purdue went to a fifth set for the eighth time this season and moved to a 7-1 record in those matches.
  • Grace Heaney led the team I both kills and efficiency with 21 kills on a .513% (21-1-39) in the match. It was the second time this season Heaney has hit above .500.
  • Taylor Anderson registered her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 55 assists, 13 digs and an errorless three kills on eight attacks. She also led the team to a .342 hitting %, including three sets at .400 or better.
  • The Boilermakers held a three-point advantage at 13-10 in Set 5, however the Ducks responded with a 7-2 scoring run to close the match, which included erasing Purdue’s match points at 14-13 and 15-14 in Set 5.
  • Although the Boilermakers held the edge in efficiency, serve/receive and defense were the difference-makers in the match, with Oregon out-digging Purdue 57-47, 8-6 in blocks and 7-3 in aces.
  • Dave Shondell won two challenges in the team’s first five points of Set 5.
  • Purdue hit efficiently through the first two sets with .400 attack % in each of the frames (.457% in Set 1 and .400 in Set 2). They closed it out in Set 5 with a .429.
  • Kenna Wollard finished the night with 20 kills, seven digs and a block.
  • Dior Charles led the blocking effort, posting four block assists and four kills.
