Pro Boilers: Week 5 in the NFL

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Six Purdue Football alums took the field during week five of the NFL season.

Derrick Barnes iced the Lions’ 37-24 win over the Bengals with a sack for a safety in the final two minutes of the game. His strong start to the season saw him finish second on the Lions with seven total tackles and added a tackle-for-loss.

Barnes is second on the Lions with 34 total tackles this season and third with two sacks. He is one of two players in the NFL to force a safety this season (Kaveon Merriweather, Tampa Bay). Barnes is one of five players with at least 30 total tackles, two sacks and two tackles-for-loss through the first five weeks.

George Karlaftis finished with two total tackles, a half-sack and a fumble recovery on Monday Night Football at Jacksonville. His fumble recovery came after Nick Bolton forced the ball out on a fourth-and-one on the one-yard line to hold Jacksonville out of the end zone.

The half-sack improvs Karlaftis’ team-leading total to 3.5 this season. He also paces the Chiefs with six tackles-for-loss. He is tied for seventh in the NFL in tackles-for-loss and tied for 14th in sacks.
