WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Former Purdue Track & Field stars Devynne Charlton and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi gear up for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (Sept. 13-21).
Charlton will represent the Bahamas in the women’s 100mH and Enekwechi will represent Nigeria in the shot put. Enekwechi will start things off on Saturday, Sept. 13 and Charleton has her first day of competition on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Representing the Bahamas for a fifth consecutive season on a world stage, Charlton will enter the meet ranked 11th in the 100mH (12.52).
She is coming off a sixth-place finish at the 2024 Olympics. She took fourth at the World Athletics Championships in 2023 and seventh in 2022. Charlton has qualified for the 100mH finals in four consecutive meets on the world stage dating back to her Olympics debut in 2021.
Charlton is a back-to-back 60mH winner in 2024 and 2025 at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. She has four 60mH titles on the world stage since her debut in 2018. Charlton is the world record holder in the 60mH (7.65).
Enekwechi will represent Nigeria on the world stage for a sixth consecutive season dating back to 2019 (Olympics set for 2020 was moved to 2021 due to Covid). He enters competition in Tokyo ranked sixth in the shot put (22.10m). He is one of two athletes in the top seven not from the United States.
He earned his best finish on the world stage at last year’s Olympics in sixth. Enekwechi also finished eighth at the IAAF World Championships in 2019 for his other top eight finish in world competition.
Earlier this season, Enekwechi set an African record with his 22.10m throw at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. He is the first African athlete to surpass the 22-meter mark. His throw moved him up to 35th all-time.
