MADISON, Wis. – Purdue Baseball alumnus Isaac Milburn dominated in a nine-inning no-hitter Saturday evening in the Northwoods League, striking out 10 while leading the Madison Mallards to a 1-0 victory.
Milburn threw 118 pitches and faced just 29 batters, accounting for the fourth no-hitter in the history of the Madison Mallards, a summer league team founded in 2001. It was the first solo no-hitter in the history of Warner Park. The victory was against the Green Bay Rockers, which entered the night with a 14-10 record.
The only base runners Milburn allowed came on a one-out walk in the sixth inning and two-out base on balls in the eighth. The lefty struck out the side in the top of the sixth and recorded at least one punchout in six different frames. He fanned five batters his first time through the lineup. The Lexington, Ky., native finished the night with a game score of 95.
Along with the 10 strikeouts, Milburn induced 11 ground ball outs. Green Bay only hit the ball out of the infield three times.
The time of game for Milburn's gem was two hours and eight minutes on a hot night in Wisconsin's state capital, with the temperature at 91 degrees for the 6:05 p.m. first pitch. He was recognized as the Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night for the top performance in the league this summer.
After racking up 50 strikeouts vs. 48 hits allowed in 42 innings (10.7 K/9) for Purdue this spring, the lefty has shined since joining the Mallards for his second summer in Madison. He's allowed just three runs on seven hits over 25 1/3 innings, registering 25 strikeouts vs. three walks. He pitched eight innings of one-run ball, striking out six, in his June 15 victory vs. Lakeshore.
Milburn was an Academic All-Big Ten and Academic All-District honoree for the Boilermakers this year. An opportunity in professional baseball is up next for the Purdue graduate, with the MLB Draft set for July 13-14.
