CARLSBAD, Calif. – Nels Surtani and Supapon Amornchaichan each tallied rounds of 1-over par 73, but the Purdue men's golf team couldn't get anything going in the opening round of the NCAA Championships held at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.

The Boilermakers shot a 19-over par 307 to finish the initial 18 holes in 30th place.

Purdue could get nothing going on the greens in the first round, as the Boilermakers' counting team managed just five birdies and registered four double-bogeys. Three of the birdies came from freshman Supapon Amornchaichan.

To showcase Purdue's struggles, there were five holes that played under par in the first round – Nos. 11, 2, 6, 18 and 15. The Purdue counting team played those holes in a combined 7-over par with just one birdie and two double-bogeys on the holes.

Freshman Supapon Amornchaichan continued his recent strong play with a 1-over par 73, sitting in 47th place after 18 holes. Amornchaichan bogeyed his first two holes, but ended his first nine with three birdies in a four-hole span to move to even-par. He would bogey his final hole of the day, but his 73 was the lowest for a Purdue freshman in the NCAA Championships since 2014.

Senior Nels Surtani also fired a 1-over par 73 to tie Amornchaichan for Purdue's low round of the day. Surtani birdied his first hole of the day, bogeyed his third and sixth holes, then parred the final 12 holes for his 1-over par 73.

Surtani has now posted 12 straight rounds of 75 or lower and his 35 rounds of 75 or lower this season has tied first-team All-American Lee Williamson (2002) for the most in school history.

Kent Hsiao is T-141st at 7-over par 79, while Sam Easterbrook is T-152nd at 10-over par 82 and Jenson Forrester is tied for 155th at 12-over par 84.

Purdue will tee off round two from 3:45 to 4:29 p.m. ET, off hole No. 1 on Saturday.
