SARASOTA, Fla. – Sophomore Jasmine Kahler and freshman Lauren Timpf were 4-over through the opening 36 holes of the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational to lead Purdue Women's Golf on the first day in Florida. As a team, the Boilermakers (+26) find themselves in 13th place heading into Monday's final round.
Kahler made a team-high five birdies throughout the day, including a pair to start her tournament. Three birdies, three pars and three bogeys on her opening nine allowed the Boilermaker to make the turn at even par. She added eight pars and only one bogey on the back to card a 73 (+1), Purdue's lowest round of the day. Kahler followed that up with a 75 (+3) in the afternoon, which featured a pair of birdies on par 4s. The sophomore played the par 4s 1-under through the first two rounds, ranking fifth in the field.
Returning to the lineup for the first time since the Windy City Collegiate Classic (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), Timpf matched Kahler with a 4-over day. After a bogey-bogey start, the freshman settled in with birdies on two of her next three holes to get back to level par. Three bogeys without a birdie on the back nine led to an opening-round 75 (+3). During the afternoon, Timpf shaved two strokes to post the Boilermakers' best second round, a 1-over 73 that matched Kahler for the round of the day. She made 15 pars, going even par through her final 17 holes after opening with a bogey.
Freshman Samantha Brown shot matching scores of 76 (+4) to contribute to Purdue's team score in both rounds. After not finding a birdie on her opening 18, she made back-to-back birdies at the par-3 ninth and the par-4 10th.
It was a tough day on the links for seniors Natasha Kiel and Momo Sugiyama, who entered the tournament with Purdue's two best stroke averages at 72.61 and 73.94, respectively. Sugiyama (+10) carded rounds of 76 and 78, while Kiel (+12) posted a 76 followed by an 80. Both Boilermakers look to bounce back in tomorrow's final round.
The final round begins with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. ET. Purdue will be paired with Grand Valley State (+27) and FIU (+38), teeing off on holes 14-16 at Palm Aire Country Club.
