#25 Boilers Open B1G Season With Win Over Wildcats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue wrestling team opened its Big Ten Conference slate with a 31-13 win over Northwestern Friday night in Holloway Gymnasium.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 25 Purdue wrestling team opened its Big Ten Conference slate with a 31-13 win over Northwestern Friday night in Holloway Gymnasium.

The Boilermakers (7-1, 1-0 B1G) earned five bonus point wins to match their best dual record since the 2019-20 season.

The team donned special edition volt-colored uniforms for its annual Hammer Down Cancer dual. The wrestlers' match-worn singlets were auctioned off to fans seeking a piece of history, with all proceeds benefiting the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research.

Purdue improved to 49-44-2 in the all-time series against the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1 B1G). The Boilers have now won seven of the last 10 against their conference rival dating back to 2013. RAMOS DOMINATES FINAL FIRST HOME MATCH Undefeated redshirt-senior Matt Ramos remains unblemished after notching yet another technical fall, extending his nation-leading total to 11 this season.

The top-ranked 125-pounder beat Dedrick Navarro 20-4 at the 5:17 mark, good for Ramos' highest point total of the year.

Not only is Ramos undefeated at 17-0; he hasn't been taken down all season. The Lockport, Illinois, native has landed 54 takedowns himself. DOWN GOES NO. 10 In the biggest upset of the night, No. 33 Greyson Clark defeated Northwestern's No. 10 Chris Cannon in a 13-9 decision at 141 lbs.

It was the sophomore's first-ever top-10 win, and it would have been a major decision if not for a quick takedown by Cannon in the final seconds to prevent bonus points.

Clark brought arguably his best stuff of the season to rack up a lead that reached as high as 11-3 in the third period over Cannon, holding on for the big win. FILIPOVICH FINISHES STRONG Hayden Filipovich came out firing in the heavyweight match and raced to a 7-0 lead in the first 40 seconds over Dirk Morley.

After a single-leg takedown that Morley didn't see coming, the Indianapolis native rolled him over for a pin at the 2:29 mark.

Filipovich's seventh career fall served as the only pin of the night by either team. BLAZE BACK IN A B1G WAY Wrestling for the first time since climbing the podium at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on December 7, No. 7 Joey Blaze returned to beat Jacob Bostelman in an 11-3 major decision.

Blaze held a narrow 5-3 lead over the Wildcats' 157-pounder until a furious rally occurred in the last six seconds of the match.

A takedown, a two-point near-fall and a riding time point pushed Blaze over the top for his eighth bonus win of the season. VICTORIOUS BOILERMAKERS ABOUND No. 26 Brody Baumann brought the offensive fireworks once again, breezing to a 17-2 tech fall in just 3:35 over Aiden Vandenbush.

Winner of five of his last six, the 174-pound star is in the midst of a breakout redshirt-sophomore campaign.

Baumann's last four wins came by a combined score of 77-15.

Redshirt-freshman Orlando Cruz reached into his bag to match his highest career point total, beating Matt Kubas with a 19-4 tech fall at 6:04.

Filling in for typical 184-pound starter James Rowley, Cruz has strung together back-to-back wins, including a victory in his first career Big Ten match.

Dustin Norris impressed in a 13-7 decision win over Massey Odiotti.

The redshirt junior has caught fire in recent weeks, improving his win streak to four thanks to a pair of takedowns, a four-point near-fall, an escape and a riding time point in the 133-pound bout. UP NEXT Purdue has a quick turnaround before a road trip to DeKalb, Illinois, on Sunday, facing Northern Illinois in the final non-conference dual of the season.

The matinee dual is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET at NIU Convocation Center. Fans at home can watch every match live on ESPN+. RESULTS - #25 PURDUE 31, NORTHWESTERN 13 125 | #1 Matt Ramos (PUR) over Dedrick Navarro (NU) - TF 20-4 (5:17) | PUR 5-0
