WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In what will be the final weekly accolade of his career, Purdue senior Zach Edey was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the 12th time in his career, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The 12 weekly awards continue to be the most in Big Ten history, surpassing the 10 won by Ohio State's Evan Turner in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Edey won six weekly honors during both his junior and senior seasons and his 12 accolades have come in a 34-week span.
Edey led the Boilermakers to a pair of key wins during the week, helping Purdue clinch the outright Big Ten regular-season title for the second straight year with a 28-point, 8-rebound, 3-assist, 2-block performance in a win over No. 12-ranked Illinois on Tuesday. He followed that performance with a 25-point, 14-rebound, 3-assist, 3-block showing in Sunday's home-finale win over Wisconsin.
For the season, Edey is now averaging 24.2 points, 11.7 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 2.0 assists per game. He has scored at least 20 points in the last eight games, averaging 27.1 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.1 blocks per game in that span.
He led the Big Ten this season in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage, doing so in consecutive seasons. Last year, he became the first Big Ten player to do that since the 1963-64 season (Ohio State's Gary Bradds). Edey is also the only player in Big Ten history to have a 700-point, 350-rebound season – he has two of them.
The Big Ten yearly awards will be announced on Tuesday, March 12, at noon on the Big Ten Network.
The Boilermakers are the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, starting play Friday at noon in Minneapolis.
