WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Swimming is set to be represented by five Boilermakers in both 5K races at the CSCAA Open Water Championships on Sunday morning in Miami's Biscayne Bay.
The men's 5K event begins at 8 a.m. ET and the women's 5K race follows at 10 a.m. The forecast calls for air temperatures in the mid-70s Sunday morning in South Florida.
The Purdue men are making their debut at the CSCAA Open Water Championships this year. Freshman Adele Sands (Lutz, Fla., in the Tampa area) returns to her home state this weekend.
The 2023 Open Water Championships were canceled due to unfavorable water conditions and poor weather. The Purdue women planning to compete were at the Indianapolis Airport when word came down the showcase was canceled.
Last year's cancellation coupled with three of the five Purdue women competing this year being freshmen has led to junior Reagan Mattice being the only Boilermaker with previous experience at the Open Water Championship. She finished 15th overall – among the top 86th percentile of the field – in her (overall) open water debut at the 2022 event. Mattice teamed up with 2021 event champion Kate Beavon to make the Boilermakers one of the five women's teams in attendance with two of the top 15 finishers.
Mattice is coming off a victory in the mile at the Purdue Invitational at the women's last meet, teaming up with Sands and Caitlin Hurley for a 1-2-3 finish in the event.
For the men, Evan Mackesy was among the 10 Boilermakers to race at USA Swimming's Toyota U.S. Open Championships last weekend in Greensboro. The freshman raced in the mile on the final day of the meet, his last of our individual events (500 and 1650 free, 200 back, 400 IM). Gabe Eschbach was sixth in the mile at the Purdue Invite.
Beavon's victory came in September 2021 when the open water showcase was held at Lone Star Lake near Lawrence, Kansas. She went on to represent South Africa in the 5K open water race at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Japan.
