WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ā Redshirt senior Matt Ramos was named Co-Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week on Thursday following his first-place performance at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
The historic conference award is Ramos' second of 2024, first winning it on Nov. 14 after taking the 125-pound title at the Tiger Style Invitational. He is the only wrestler in the Big Ten to have been named Wrestler of the Week twice so far this season.
In the nation's premier in-season wrestling tournament in Las Vegas, Ramos dominated a talented 125-pound bracket with ranked wins over No. 4 Troy Spratley (Oklahoma State), No. 11 Eddie Ventresca (Virginia Tech) and a forfeit from No. 12 Vincent Robinson (NC State).
The national leader in technical falls opened the weekend by adding two more against Noah Luna (Appalachian State) and Jack Braman (Wyoming), improving his season tech fall total to nine.
Ramos became the fifth Cliff Keen champion in school history and the first since Dylan Lydy won the title in 2019. Lydy's championship earned him Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors as well, and that was the last time a Boilermaker had won the conference award until Ramos first did so last month.
After becoming the first four-time CKLV placewinner in school history, Ramos rose in the rankings to become the consensus No. 1-ranked 125-pound wrestler in the country.
Undefeated at 14-0 with five ranked victories, he has 40 takedowns and 73 back points. Ramos has yet to surrender a single takedown or back point to an opponent this season.
The Lockport, Ill., native has continued to climb up various Purdue career record lists in his fourth year of action. He ranks third in career win percentage (.810), tied for 18th in career wins (98) and 14th in back points (185).
Ramos' co-winner for the conference honor is Nebraska's Antrell Taylor, who won the 157-pound CKLV title.
