WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue's Cameron Miller and Alexia Smith were named Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Athletes to Watch, the conference announced on Wednesday. Each program had one men's and one women's athlete represented on the watch list.
Miller joined the program last season during the indoor campaign and ran in three meets. His first 200m race with the Boilermakers set an indoor program record with his 20.40 finish. The previous record was Kenneth Baxter's 20.57 in 2004.
The Dallas, Texas native finished third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships with a 20.82. He qualified for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships where he ran a 20.54 in the prelims. He followed with a 20.53 in the final but was disqualified.
Prior to joining Purdue, Miller spent the 2023 season at Louisville and the 2020-22 seasons at Florida. In 2023, he was the ACC Champion in the 200m and finished fourth at indoor nationals with a 20.29. Miller was also the runner-up at the SEC Championships in 2022.
Smith finished her freshman indoor season ninth at the Big Ten Championships with a 54.19 in the 400m. The time placed her eighth in program history.
She opened her collegiate career with the third-fastest 500m time in program history (1:12.06). She followed with a fourth-place finish in the 300m (39.21) at the Badgers Midwest Invite. She also finished second in the 400m at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invite with a 55.03.
Both Miller and Smith are poised to lead the program that begins the indoor season on Friday at the Blue Demon Holiday Invitational in Chicago.
