WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football returned to practice Wednesday morning with the season opener versus Indiana State just 10 days away.
Entering his second season at Purdue, cornerbacks coach Sam Carter spoke to the media after practice for the first time this fall. He leads a position group that features a mixture of returning stars and new faces. Carter was joined by defensive backs Markevious Brown and Kyndrich Breedlove.
"Understanding the defense better," Carter said when asked what he wants the cornerbacks to improve on from last season. "We got a lot of transfer guys mid-year last year, and just everything speeds up. Understanding that Coach is going to call certain coverages, we've got to play. We ask you to play man, you'll play man. We ask you to play zone, you'll play zone. Just knowing that there's 10 other people on the field who are depending on you to do your job. My biggest thing for them is just do your job, don't worry about [anything] else. If you do your job every snap, everything else will work out."
Brown is set to take the field for his senior season after totaling a team-high two forced fumbles in 2023. After getting some fall camp snaps as a pass rusher with the blitz, he's excited to be part of a defense that attacks in multiple ways.
"[There are] a lot of one-on-ones in this defense," Brown said. "If you want to be a guy, if you want to be a dude, this is the defense that proves it. It's a lot of one-on-one situations, it's a lot of man-on-man situations. Every day, every rep, you have to go out and win your battle."
A junior from Nashville, Tennessee, Breedlove transferred to Purdue after playing nine games at Colorado last season. Prior to his stop in Boulder, he spent two seasons at Ole Miss. Breedlove explained why he's excited to be a Boilermaker.
"Having talked with Coach Carter and Coach [Ryan Walters], the environment, the atmosphere here and just the culture here," Breedlove said. "I just want to come here and work and show my abilities, show my competitiveness and come out here and compete every day.
"[Brown and I], we're on the field at the same time, we both play corner but I play in the slot and he plays outside. Us two being out there, we've got chemistry like I don't know what. Then we've got [Dillon Thieneman] in the back just correcting everything, working off everybody. I can't wait to see how we play in the fall. I know we're going to do some great things out there."
The team will be back on the field Thursday morning with the season just around the corner. Limited tickets are still available for the home opener against Indiana State on Aug. 31 in Ross-Ade Stadium.
