WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Track & field events at the 2024 Olympic Games begin for Purdue with alumnus Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the shot put.
The qualification round in Paris is set for Friday, August 2, at 2:10 p.m. ET, and the shot put final is on Saturday, August 3, at 1:35 p.m. ET. All athletes who meet the qualification standard of 21.35 meters, or at least the 12 best finishers, will advance from Friday's qualification to Saturday's final.
Enekwechi, who represents Nigeria, will compete in Group B and is 13th in the order. A total of 31 athletes qualified for the shot put, and 16 are in Group A and 15 in Group B. Track & Field events are being held at Stade de France, just north of Paris.
The shot put will be broadcast live on Peacock, and live results can be found on WorldAthletics.org. Additional updates will be available by following the Boilermakers on Twitter/X, Instagram and Facebook.
Enekwechi is joined in Paris by fellow Boilermaker alumna Devynne Charlton, who will race in the 100m hurdles beginning on Wednesday, August 7. Incoming Purdue senior Joel Gomez qualified for the Paralympic Games and will race in the 1,500m T13 from September 2-3.
Ranked No. 8 in the world in the shot put, Enekwechi hails from Laurelton, New York. He is a two-time Olympian after placing 12th in Tokyo in 2021 with a mark of 19.74m. Enekwechi secured his spot at the 2024 Paris Games by winning his fourth consecutive Nigerian Athletics Championships in the shot put on June 16 in Benin City, Nigeria. Enekwechi notched a mark of 21.37m, and he achieved his Olympic qualifying mark of 21.91m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, in May.
In his Purdue career from 2013-16, Enekwechi was a 13-time All-American and five-time NCAA medalist. He is the school record-holder in the shot put (20.37m) and hammer throw (72.77m) outdoors and shot put (19.95m) and weight throw (24.39m) indoors. Enekwechi's NCAA medals include two silvers in 2016, in the shot put outdoors and weight throw indoors. He won 12 Big Ten medals, including four golds, and was a three-time Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year.
