"It's time to take our Boilermakers back into Mackey Arena," Shondell said. "The opportunity to grow our program - as well as our sport - is essential right now. Holloway is a special home, but for a few matches this fall, our team and Boilermaker Nation, must make Mackey Arena the best home-court environment in the land."
Picking up where the program left off, volleyball's last appearance in Mackey also served as the Monon Spike match vs. Indiana on September 24, 2016, when the Boilermakers downed the Hoosiers 3-0 in front of 8,240 fans. In a rivalry known for competitive matches, last year served as one of its finest examples in recent history as the programs split the regular-season, 1-1. This year, Purdue will look to take back its rights to the trophy, after falling to Indiana in the Spike match last season in Bloomington.
Meanwhile, Purdue took down #3 Wisconsin last season in Holloway Gymnasium in a gutsy five-set thriller. In its history, Purdue and Wisconsin have faced off once before in Mackey in 2008, which its 10,570 fans remain the second-largest crowd to witness a Big Ten regular-season match in league history.
With each of the Mackey matches, Purdue fans will have the opportunity to eclipse the current 19-year-old attendance record for a regular-season match between two Big Ten opponents, which stands at 10,927 (#23 Illinois at #2 Minnesota, 10/16/04).
"Let's fill Mackey to the top on both occasions," Shondell said. "This Purdue team is worthy of the Purdue community's support, so I encourage all Purdue sports fans to buy tickets on August 6 and 7th for these classic battles that will certainly impact the 2024 conference championship. It's time."
The announcement comes on the heels of the program's first complete season sell-out in 2023. Meanwhile, a waiting list for season tickets was formed over three years ago.
Last season, Purdue (23-9, 15-5 Big Ten) finished third in the league standings and No. 13 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) final poll. Despite having one of the youngest squads in program history, Coach Shondell led the team to an NCAA Regional Semifinals appearance. Eva Hudson (second team), Chicoine (third team) and Raven Colvin (honorable mention) received All-America accolades while the team brought in a program-record-tying six Big Ten postseason honors, including two unanimous selections in Hudson and Chicoine.
Purdue's 2024 season will begin at home with the Stacey Clark Classic on Friday, August 30 vs. K-State and will face six non-conference matchups vs. 2023 NCAA tournament teams before Big Ten action begins on Wednesday, September 25 vs. Penn State at home.
It will be the first time in eight years the Boilermakers have played in the historic building. In total, volleyball has played in Mackey 19 times, including 11 matches during head coach Dave Shondell's reign.
Match times for volleyball in Mackey Arena will be announced at a later date.
