WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With swimming's quadrennial summer showcase being held in the state of Indiana for the first time since 2000, Purdue Swimming will be represented in a combined seven events at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Masy Folcik and Coleman Modglin will be making their second appearances at the Olympic Trials after also qualifying in 2021 following their freshman seasons at Purdue. While Folcik plans to return to the Boilermakers' active roster as a fifth-year student-athlete in 2024-25, Modglin said this week that the Olympic Trials would likely be his final meet as a competitive swimmer.
Brady Samuels (Muncie) and Kate Mouser (Indianapolis/Fishers HS) also qualified for Purdue and will join Modglin (Zionsville) as the programs' Indiana natives with an opportunity to compete in the state capital at the home of the Indianapolis Colts, where USA Swimming is hoping to set a world record for the largest crowd at a swim meet. Samuels qualified in three events.
Incoming Boilermaker Evan Mackesy (Derwood, Md.) also qualified for the Olympic Trials in one of the most grueling events, the 400-meter individual medley.

Three years ago after the Olympic Games were postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, swimming's U.S. Olympic Team Trials were contested with two waves of competition. Modglin and Folcik raced as part of the Wave I meet in Omaha. Modglin finished third in the prelims and finals of the 200-meter breaststroke, winning his prelim heat.
For the majority of the events at the U.S. Olympics Team Trials, the top 16 finishers in the prelims advance to the semifinals that night. The final is typically the following night. The 400 IM does not feature semifinals, with the top eight in the prelims racing for Olympic bids that night.
Previously, the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI had been site when the U.S. Olympic Team Trials were held in Indianapolis (during the modern era). It hosted the swimming trials in 1984, 1992, 1996 and 2000 as well as diving's 1984, 1988, 1992, 2008 and 2016. Diving is being contested in Knoxville this year, with 11 Boilermakers (5 active, 2 alumni, 4 incoming) set to compete. Diving's U.S. Olympic Team Trials begin Monday and Purdue's first event is men's 3-meter synchro Tuesday.
