TUCSON, Ariz. – Two Purdue track & field decathletes earned top-10 marks in the decathlon at the Jim Click Shootout on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona.
Freshman Andreas Hantson and senior Logan Sandlin both entered the record books in the decathlon at the two-day meet at Arizona's Drachman Stadium. Hantson, making his collegiate decathlon debut, etched his name at No. 4 all-time and Sandlin posted the sixth-best score in team history.
Sandlin's personal-best point total came with seven PRs in the 10 events. Hantson notched four collegiate bests, and the other six events he was competing in for the first time outdoors as a college athlete.
Hantson earned 7,212 points to become just the fourth athlete in program history to eclipse 7,000 points in the decathlon. He's the second to do it since 1998, along with Isaiah Martin, who set the record of 7,708 in 2021. Sandlin earned 6,820 points to enter the top-10 list at No. 6. That's the third-best total since 1998, along with Martin and Hantson.
With his record book mark, Hantson finished eighth overall in the competition this weekend in Tucson. He began the second day with a 16.36 in the 110-meter hurdles and followed it up with a PR of 39.11 meters in the discus. Another best of 50.69m in the javelin was preceded by the pole vault (4.25m). Hantson's meet wrapped up with a first-place showing in the 1,500m in 4:33.93.
Sandlin's decathlon PR earned him a 13th-place finish overall. He began Saturday with the 110m hurdles (15.81w) and continued with a collegiate best in the discus of 36.57m. Then it was the pole vault (4.65m) before two more PRs concluded the competition. The javelin saw Sandlin throw 44.72m, and he was fourth in the 1,500m, in 4:42.67, for the finale.
Sophomore Bryanna Craig finished 10th in the heptathlon with 5,285 points. Her meet finished with back-to-back sixth-place finishes, in the javelin (35.77m) and 800m (2:19.98). Craig's second day opened with a long jump mark of 5.27m. On Friday, Craig posted PRs in all conditions in three of four events.
Junior Jalen Elrod earned a personal-best 5,124 points to finish 11th overall in her first heptathlon as a Boilermaker. On Saturday, she earned a long jump mark of 5.63m and a javelin throw of 27.96m before her best finish of the day. That came in the 800m with a time of 2:19.65 to finish fifth. Elrod's meet began with collegiate bests in all four events on Friday.
Nine schools, plus several unattached athletes, were represented in the decathlon and heptathlon this weekend. The field included host-Arizona and Big Ten foes Iowa and Nebraska. Nineteen athletes finished the decathlon and 17 completed the heptathlon.
All event groups are back in action next weekend, at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, from April 12-13, and the Gary Wieneke Memorial in Champaign, Illinois, on April 13.
