LEXINGTON, Ky. – Five top-five finishes and another top-10 mark in school history opened the weekend for the Purdue track & field team at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky, on Friday.
On a cool and cloudy afternoon, after a morning of rain, the Boilermakers opened the weekend with sophomore Leo Maxwell improving on his record book mark in the hammer throw. He was third in the invitational event to get the day's top finishes started.
This weekend's two-day meet is the penultimate competition of the outdoor regular season. Purdue is part of a 30-team field at Kentucky's Outdoor Track & Field Complex, which includes Big Ten foes Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State.
In the hammer throw early on Friday afternoon, Maxwell posted a personal-best mark of 64.12 meters. He improved on his place at No. 8 in Purdue history with a collegiate best by 0.79m. The 64.12m came on his fifth throw and moved him up from fourth place in the competition. Maxwell was one of only two competitors to notch three or more throws of 62.00m or better.
Meanwhile, the day began with the heptathlon, where sophomores Bryanna Craig and Jalen Elrod sit in first and fifth place, respectively, after the first four events.
Craig leads the competition with 3,162 points. Her meet began with two first-place finishes, in the 100m hurdles (14.46) and high jump (1.66m), to highlight the day. Elrod is fifth with 2,795 points. She was propelled by a strong finish, coming in fifth in the shot put (10.57m) and second in the 200m (25.26).
Freshman Sofia Muñoz posted a runner-up finish in the 3,000m steeplechase. In her collegiate steeplechase debut, she finished in 11:05.35. Fellow first-year Julia Economou was fourth (11:14.41). Minutes later, senior Joey Kasch placed fifth in the men's steeplechase (9:44.91).
Graduate student Safin Wills also was fourth in the long jump (7.22m) for the Old Gold and Black on Friday.
The meet concludes on Saturday, April 20. The final three events of the heptathlon start the day at 10:30 a.m. ET. Purdue's first throwing event gets underway 30 minutes later, at 11 a.m., with the first running event set to begin at 12:40 p.m. The weekend will wrap up at approximately 5 p.m.
