URBANA, Ill. – Purdue's longest program win streak in Big Ten play came to an end at seven straight games as the Boilermakers fell to the Illinois Fighting Illini, 4-1 in the series finale. Purdue (20-19, 7-5 Big Ten) and Illinois (16-24, 3-9 Big Ten) were tied until the sixth inning when the Illini posted three runs.
Despite the result, Purdue won the series, 2-1, following a 3-0 shutout on Friday and an 11-4 victory yesterday.
Purdue scored a run in the first inning, thanks to an RBI single by Sage Scarmardo, which scored Khloe Banks. The Boilermakers were called out at home in the sixth inning and left seven runners stranded.
Meanwhile, Purdue's defense shined in the second inning, when Moriah Polar registered a fly ball catch in left field and made the long throw to catcher Ryen Ross for the tag out at home to end the inning.
In total, Purdue and Illinois were even with seven hits apiece. Each team committed two errors.
Starting pitcher Emma Bailey registered a career-high two strikeouts, both of which came in the opening frame to secure the performance-best before Julia Gossett entered in relief. Gossett (8-7) went on to close the final 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out three batters.
