AUSTIN, Texas and SAN MARCOS, Texas. – The 4x400 relay team finished second with one of the fastest times in school history to conclude the Texas Relays for the Purdue track & field team in Austin, Texas, on Saturday.
The Boilermakers' runner-up finish capped a three-day weekend at the prestigious national meet, as the squad also competed at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas the past three days. The 4x400 relay was Purdue's fourth top-three finish at the highly competitive Texas Relays this weekend.
Throughout the three days at the two meets, the Boilermakers combined to win one event and earn 10 top-five finishes. Thirteen personal bests were achieved by the Old Gold and Black.
Purdue went out with a bang at the Texas Relays, as the 4x400 finished second in 3:07.47. The seventh-fastest time in school history, it's the first top-10 time in the event since 2019. The record book mark was run by junior Brett Otterbacher, sophomore Connor Czajkowski, graduate student Cameron Miller and freshman Nickens Lemba. The 3:07.47 was an improvement by 2.61 seconds over Friday's preliminary mark that sent Purdue to the final.
Saturday began for the Boilermakers with a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay. With a season-best time of 39.78, sophomore Nolan Macklin, graduate student Cameron Miller, sophomore Connor Czajkowski and freshman Jasiah Rogers improved on their time from yesterday's prelim by 0.27 seconds.
Sophomore Seth Allen reached the final in the section A discus and was ninth overall. In 11th place after two throws, Allen's third attempt went 55.14 meters, good enough to move him up into the top nine for a spot in the final. The 55.14m proved to be Allen's best throw on the day.
Junior Rieko Wilford then earned earn own place in the final, with hers coming in the section A triple jump. She finished ninth overall with a jump of 12.64m. That came on Wilford's second jump, and she never moved outside of the top nine throughout the competition.
Meanwhile in San Marcos at the Texas State Track & Field Complex, the women's 4x100 relay team placed third with a time of 45.31. It's a season-best mark for the Boilermakers.
Junior Cale Ayers got the day started in San Marcos with a personal-best in the hammer throw thanks to a mark of 62.46m. Senior Logan Sandlin ran a PR in the 110 meter hurdles (15.43), as did freshman Jada Lee in the 100m (12.01).
On Thursday to begin Purdue's weekend in the Lone Star State, senior Caroline Jordan won the Texas Relays 10,000-meter, while fellow senior Caleb Williams was the runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase as he entered the school top-10 list in the event. Jordan and Williams had two of Purdue's eight top-five finishes at the Texas Relays or the Bobcat Invitational on Thursday.
On Friday, the Boilermakers' 4x100 and 4x400 relays punched their tickets to Saturday's finals at the Texas Relays. Purdue athletes earned five personal-best marks, two at the Texas Relays and three at the Bobcat Invite.
Purdue's travel roster to the Lone Star State featured 43 athletes. 27 men and 16 women. The 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, one of the most prestigious national meets, was hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium. Texas State University's Bobcat Invite was at the Texas State Track & Field Complex, 31 miles south southwest of UT's track.
Up next, Purdue's combined events athletes will travel to Arizona next weekend for the Jim Click Shootout. Competition is set for April 5-6 in Tucson, Arizona.
