WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Tuesday's midweek opener in South Bend features two teams off to equally strong starts as 8-3 Purdue Baseball visits 8-2 Notre Dame for the first in-state meeting between the two schools since 2007.
First pitch for the home opener at Frank Eck Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra portal on ESPN's website and app. Similar to ESPN3, a verified pay-TV subscription is required to access ACCNX streams.
The Boilermakers have won each of their first three weekends of the season, accomplishing the feat for the second time in five seasons under head coach Greg Goff. Now they play their next 15 games in the state of Indiana, a stretch that includes a 13-game homestand that begins Friday. The 15-game stretch is bookended by big games at Notre Dame (Tuesday) and at Indiana State (March 26). ND and ISU have both been to Super Regionals since 2022 and, like Purdue, are off to strong starts this year.
The Fighting Irish have three-game series sweeps at Rice and Tennessee Tech on their resumé. They also split a four-game series at FIU. As the visiting team in all 10 games, Notre Dame has racked up 97 runs. Purdue has been the designated home team in nine of its first 11 games, scoring 95 runs. Both teams have scored 10-plus runs five times already. The Irish did it in all three wins this past weekend in Cookeville, Tenn. The Boilermakers have scored 10-plus in each of their three Sunday victories and been limited to fewer than five runs just once.
Dating back to 2009, the last five Purdue-Notre Dame games have been neutral-site meetings played in February. The Boilermakers and Fighting Irish met three times in four years from 2009 to 2012 at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge in the Clearwater-St. Petersburg area of Florida's Gulf Coast. They also split two games at the 2018 edition of ND's Alamo Irish Classic, which was played at the minor league stadium in San Antonio.
The last midweek matchup (and in-state meeting) was a 10-inning thriller in South Bend that featured Purdue's Matt Bischoff carrying a perfect game into the ninth inning. Notre Dame broke up the perfecto with a leadoff single in the ninth and then ended the scoreless stalemate with a run in the bottom of the 10th. Bischoff struck out seven while facing 28 batters over nine innings that day. He went on to break the program's all-time strikeout record as a senior in 2010 and still holds the benchmark.
Having agreed to an annual home-and-home midweek series, Notre Dame is scheduled to visit West Lafayette next season for the first time since 1997.
Despite its geographical disadvantages, Notre Dame won the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 25-10 league record in 2021 and went to the College World Series the following season after winning an NCAA Regional at Georgia Southern and upsetting top-seeded Tennessee in a Super Regional. Head coach Shawn Stiffler came over from VCU for the 2022-23 school year and led ND to another 30-win season last season.
Purdue went just 3-6 in midweek action last season, a mark the program needs to improve on this year if it's going to make the most of its 8-3 start. The Boilermakers are 36-34 away from West Lafayette since the start of the 2022 season, but just 9-26 in true road games.
