WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Wrestling's late push for a comeback came up short on Sunday afternoon, as they fell in a competitive affair with Wisconsin 24-15 in Holloway Gymnasium.
The dual came down to the last match, but the Boilermakers (5-8, 0-5 B1G) could not come away with the win in their fifth conference contest of the season. Head coach Tony Ersland's team picked up four wins on the day, but the essential fifth to secure the dual victory just eluded them at multiple weights.
197-pounder Ben Vanadia gave the Boilers life late when he secured a first period pin (1:44) of Lucas Condon. The redshirt-sophomore Vanadia shot in a single, transitioned to a double, and secured the takedown to get on the board first. From bottom, Condon tried to roll through for a reversal, but Vanadia caught him in the act and put him to his back for the fall.
Heavyweight Tristan Ruhlman then had the opportunity to win it for Purdue. He came ever so close to a pin himself late in the first period but could only get four nearfall points out of the exchange before eventually losing to Gannon Rosenfeld.
To start the dual, No. 1 Matt Ramos once again showed he is the class of the 125 pounders this season by picking up yet another ranked win with a 5-1 decision over No. 2 Eric Barnett. The reigning All-American put the Badger on his back for four nearfall in the second and that was enough to see him to victory. He is now 3-0 against top-2 opposition this season.
A pair of Boilers stepped into the lineup and earned their first career Big Ten dual wins. At 141 Christian White won a 4-3 decision over Zan Fugitt and at 157 Ike Ruble won a hectic 14-12 decision over Cody Goebel. A takedown off a single-leg early in the first for White gave him control of the match that he would not surrender. Ruble used three takedowns and five escapes to stay ahead of Goebel. Both matches put Purdue back in the lead in the team score.
UP NEXT The Boilermakers have a home-and-away weekend coming up, with a dual at Northwestern on Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET before returning to Holloway on Sunday for a matchup with No. 10 Minnesota at noon. Both events will be streamed on B1G+.
