WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Wrestling won five of its matches on the night, two in bonus fashion, but came up one point shy of a win in a 19-18 loss to Illinois on Friday in Holloway Gymnasium.
The Boilermakers (6-10, 1-7 B1G) wrapped up dual season with an exciting match at home that saw the lead change hands six times as the two teams split the bouts five apiece. Head coach Tony Ersland's team got bonus point wins from No. 1 Matt Ramos and No. 31 Stoney Buell to go along with decisions from Marcos Polanco, Isaac Ruble, and Ben Vanadia.
The dual started off with a bang for the Boilers as the top-ranked Ramos won his fourth tech fall of the season in a 17-1 (4:56) domination of Caelen Riley. The Lockport, Ill., native racked up 11 back points in just two periods to seal the victory. It is the 13th straight win for Ramos, a career best stretch, who finishes Big Ten dual season undefeated after wrestling all eight of his possible matches. 11 is the most back points he has garnered in a single match in his career.
Buell picked up his fourth major decision and fifth Big Ten dual win of the year with an 11-3 victory over Chris Moore. Takedowns in the first and third and exactly one minute of riding time pushed the redshirt-sophomore into bonus points.
Redshirt-senior Marcos Polanco picked up his first Big Ten dual win in the old gold and black with a gutsy 10-8 decision over Jake Harrier. The California kid bagged his first takedown in the first 20 seconds to get on the board first, but needed another T3 to come from behind in the third and earn the win.
Another exciting match followed Polanco's when Ike Ruble scrambled his way to a 5-1 decision win against Logan Swaw. The Illinois wrestler looked poised to take the lead after getting in on a single, but Ruble had other ideas. Some great defense turned into a takedown for the Boilermaker who would ride out the remainder of the period.
The redshirt-freshman has been asked to step into the lineup three times this season and has delivered on all three occasions. He will finish the year 3-0 in dual action and on a seven-match winning streak.
The final win of the night for the Boilermakers came in a clutch performance from Ben Vanadia to take a 9-7 decision from Isiah Pettigrew that put Purdue ahead and gave them a chance to win it in the final match. Pettigrew scored first on an early takedown, but Vanadia hit back to take the lead. Great work on top throughout the bout gave the Brecksville, Ohio native 1:54 of riding time that proved to be the difference.
